“The purpose of the law is to prevent the rich from always getting their way.”— James Madison, 1787
Two-thirds of California residents are tenants — a 66% majority. Yet only about 5% of tenants actually register to vote and vote. Landlords are only 2% of the population, but they vote, and they make campaign contributions. Why should a politician protect tenants when he can get huge campaign contributions from the landlords if he helps landlords, instead?
It's a vicious cycle. Tenants don't register because they think nothing will change. Nothing changes because tenants don't register. When politicians see the voter registration numbers change, so will the laws.
If you were registered at your old address, you need to re-register at your current one. Every time you move, you need to update your registration.
The statewide rent control petition got 40% of the vote — only 11% away from winning. Imagine what would happen if tenants actually registered and voted.
