That means when the politicians are deciding whether to favor the landlords who give them money or the few tenants who might show up at the polls to vote for the name they see the most, they favor the landlords. This new law is an example of that. If tenants voted in the numbers that homeowners do, politicians would be tripping over each other to write strong laws for tenants. If you don\u2019t register to vote AND VOTE, you are part of your own problem. And that\u2019s the truth.<\/p><p>Tenants as a group are \u201cdisenfranchised,\u201d excluded from consideration and the process, in that vicious cycle. We don\u2019t register to vote, so when the politicians look at where their votes will be coming from, the R-4 apartment zones show very low registration. If tenants don\u2019t register to vote, that means you don\u2019t care what they do. If you don\u2019t care, they don\u2019t care. You end up with a choice at the polls between politicians who never mention the tenants\u2019 needs, because they don\u2019t want to offend the landlords who use your rent money to pay for the politicians\u2019 campaign. You have nobody \u201cworth\u201d voting for, and so you don\u2019t vote, and don\u2019t even register. You need to break out of that vicious cycle.<\/p><p>You may have been registered to vote, but then forgot to re-register in the hassle of your move to a new place. Times goes on and it\u2019s entirely forgotten until the election comes but you don\u2019t get a ballot, because you\u2019re not registered. Another election, another silence, and another signal to the politicians that you don\u2019t care. Register. It takes only 5 minutes on line:<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/registertovote.ca.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">https:\/\/registertovote.ca.gov<\/a>.<\/p><p>There was a statewide rent control petition on the ballot recently, that got a 40% vote. That\u2019s only 11% from winning. If tenants start registering to vote now, when that petition gets back on the ballot, we can win, and have a real rent control law that finally provides us with the protection we want and need. Why are the laws so one-sided in favor of \u00a0landlords? \u00a0It\u2019s no mystery:\u00a0<\/span><strong>only about 5% of tenants vote.<\/strong><span>\u00a0\u00a0Why should a politician protect tenants when he can get huge campaign contributions from the landlords if he helps landlords, instead?<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3e4b559 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"3e4b559\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cdb0ac1 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"cdb0ac1\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8b9b537 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8b9b537\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"vc_empty_space\"><span class=\"vc_empty_space_inner\"><\/span><\/div><div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><p><strong>Change that.<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0When politicians see the voter registration numbers change, so will the laws. \u00a0<strong>If you were registered at your old address, you need to re-register at your current one.<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>Don\u2019t be part of the problem; be part of the solution.
